For James and Martha Willis, love first sparked under the Friday night lights of a football game nearly 70 years ago. Martha was there with her best friend – who, as fate would have it, had once dated James. But that night, James only had eyes for Martha.
It wasn’t long before the two were inseparable. Just six months later, they exchanged vows at Northside Baptist Church in Mexia, TX, and settled into their first home together—a cozy duplex filled with hopes, dreams, and the excitement of a new beginning.
Like so many young couples, they built a life on love, hard work, and shared commitment.

James, a television repairman, was often on call 24 hours a day, while Martha devoted herself to creating a warm and loving home. Their family soon grew, welcoming a son and a daughter who filled their days with laughter, adventure, and joyful chaos.
Through the years, they faced life’s inevitable challenges, yet they always returned to the foundation that held them together – partnership. Looking back, they believe that taking time to listen, to work through difficulties hand in hand, made all the difference. It’s a lesson they hope young couples today will take to heart.
Their journey has been filled with beautiful memories – anniversaries spent side by side, special trips, family gatherings, and the simple joy of everyday moments. James fondly recalls Martha as a devoted mother, her presence shaping the heart of their home. Martha, in turn, reflects on the kindness and steady devotion that have always defined James.
Even in later years, when Martha’s health challenges led her to Midtowne Meadows Health and Rehab, their love never wavered. James visited often, but Martha’s thoughts were always with him, worrying about him being home alone.
Their reunion – now living together once more – has brought them a new kind of joy. Martha saying, “life is just as wonderful.” With the comfort of each other’s presence, they embrace this season of life, enjoying activities, visits from loved ones, and the delight of their growing family, which now includes three grandsons and six great-grandchildren.

As Valentine’s Day approaches, Martha hopes their love story serves as an example – for their children, their grandchildren, and young couples just starting their journeys. Their story is proof that love, when nurtured with patience and care, can withstand the tests of time.
And on March 4, they will celebrate a remarkable milestone – 70 years of marriage. A testament to the enduring power of love, commitment, and the beauty of a life well lived, together.
